A brand-new trivia quiz show for YouTube influencer Tom Scott

The Project

YouTube influencer Tom Scott wanted to create a brand-new game show called Disconnected, using WL’s SmartStage to enable remote participants to play along in three separate heats, before a grand final.

The Brief

The team had to visually bring to life Tom Scott presenting the game show from the top of a virtual broadcast tower, rendered using Notch and powered by the disguise XR workflow.

The Delivery

As pioneers of XR environments, WL provided a full turnkey solution including virtual production environment, cameras, lighting, full technical expertise and support. Using WL’s award-winning SmartStage allowed Tom and his team to arrive onsite and experience full virtual production with XR, to bring his set design and game format to life, without needing any prior experience of using the technology. All of the episodes were shot in one afternoon at WL’s COVID-secure facility in Wimbledon. The power of the SmartStage, with disguise’s XR workflow and content made in a real-time engine meant that the studio could be “placed” exactly where needed to suit the required camera shots. This enabled the team to rotate, scale and tweak the design in moments, without any need to render new content, and ensure that the optimum shots were set-up exactly as required – all within moments of arriving on-site. WL’s SmartStage tightly integrates video conferencing codecs into the system, which allowed remote participants to seamlessly appear as content anywhere within the set as needed – providing low-latency natural conversation between the host and guests with real eyelines and interaction. The disguise XR toolset allowed for a virtual set extension to be added seamlessly outside the footprint of the LED walls, giving the appearance of a full 360 digital environment to the camera/viewer.

The Results

The position of the camera was tracked using a Mo- Sys StarTracker system so that the content could be generated to its perspective. Tom was fitted with a Blacktrax beacon so that his position could be tracked in 3D space, with automated lighting following him around the stage – reducing the setup time and improving the quality of the production. The innovative capabilities of SmartStage and disguise XR meant that everything could be recorded live and straight to disk, minimalising the need for post production and editing.
